And Now, A Word From the Chief

My Brothers,

I have the honor of representing you for the 2008-2009 term.  I look forward to the coming year and I am proud to represent you.  From what I have seen, this Lodge is thriving.  It is all thanks to you.

You have met the challenge of the Order.  You have served and have been cheerful in doing so.  I am always happy to see my fellow Scouts enjoying just what I enjoy.  Camp Lavigne and the community around us are much better places because of your dedication.  As stated in the Ordeal Ceremony, “Membership obligates you to a life of cheerful service.”  I am pleased to see that you are not obligated at all.  You face service and the needs of others with great eagerness.  This is an accomplishment to be proud of.

However, remember that service never ends.  Answer the call and continue in your service.  Follow the paths of your brothers before you.  I strongly urge you to continue to seek the feeling of satisfaction that unselfish service can bring.

As Chief, I look forward to hearing from you.  Please feel free to contact me if you need any help.  I still desire the same feeling of satisfaction.  I enjoy helping others.  Please keep in touch.  I enjoy hearing from you and your input will help make this a great year.

Respectfully submitted,

Adam F

Wyona Lodge Chief

2008-2009

Wyona Lodge Ceremony Team

As NOAC 2009 approaches, it is now time for a team to be selected to compete at the National level.  The team will be having open tryouts for the four chief parts of the Pre-Ordeal Ceremony.  The parts are Allowat Sakima, Meteu, Kitchkinet, and Nutiket.  If you need a copy of the ceremony to memorize a part, please contact me.  We would like to have a team selected by Thanksgiving at the latest so that we can begin practicing.  We will be holding two practices before then.  They will take place on November 8, the Saturday of Fall Fellowship, at Camp Lavigne and Saturday November 22 at a location TBD at the first practice.  If you are interested in a part, please let me know.  Thanks.

Yours in Scouting,

Adam F

Lodge Leadership Development

This training is a must for all Lodge Officers. It is one of the requirements for Quality Lodge and it will give you the tools needed to help you with your responsibility. Any one can attend, but it is mandatory for officers.  We learn how to do a Budget; how a Lodge is structured; play a game or two; eat; socialize; get to know one another; some job training; etc. Adult advisers are also welcomed. There is no fee! Earn a patch! Learn about the Lodge! Let Pam know if you are coming before Oct 30 so we can plan on food. Call office 784-2700 or email pstartze@bsamail.org.

At the time of publication- the lodge was in need of only 8 members to pay their dues for us to reach the 226 members to make Quality Lodge. Do you know a member in your troop who has not paid?  Included in this issue is the new dues form for 2009, payable at the Winter Banquet. Dues are $8.00.  Deadline is January 31 to avoid paying the late fee of $6.00. Please fill out the medical form and bring it in also so we have one for the 2009 year.

New Fall Ordeal members, please remember that you must also renew your dues in January.

The 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) is approaching fast! NOAC 2009 will be held August 1-6 at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Come join brothers from all over the country for this exciting event!  The patch design that has been approved for the contingent is shown to the right. The thunder bolts and border are glow in the dark. The black-bordered trader flaps will be available for purchase soon.  The NOAC fee is $395 per person; the contingent fee will be slightly higher in order to include travel, lodging, and food expenses. Looking at a total cost of about $600. Fill out the form and bring into the scout office with a $100 deposit to reserve your spot with the contingent. More information with details will be coming at the Winter Banquet.

Bloomsburg Fair

It was a cool, sunny Monday morning at the Bloomsburg Fair.  The bottled water was chilled and the Scouts were ready.  Ready for what?  Fun, Fellowship, and Community Service!  The Scouts of the Columbia-Montour Council were invited to assist in unloading the buses and vans for senior citizens and the handicapped.  This is usually a tough time for the Fair.  The buses get backed up and are unable to get unloaded in a timely manner.  This is where the Scouts come in.  As a Council-wide community service project, we assisted in unloading the buses and vans and handed out water provided by the Fair and Aquafina.  This was a good experience in humility and made many realize what we have to be thankful for.  The OA members represented over 75% of the participants present.  Great job everyone!  We hope to see even more Scouts present next year.  In attendance were:  Ed Botsford, Marcus C., James C.,  Braydon C., Adam F., David Folk, Corry G., Jeanie Gibbs, Austin G., Reed L.,  Daniel L., Brandon L., Kurtis M., Aaron M.,  Brandon M., Kent Robbins, Pam Startzel and Dan Wood III.

Popcorn Distribution

Come join me in distributing the Council’s popcorn.  I, and the council, am in need of volunteers to help distribute the Council’s Fall Popcorn.  The amount of popcorn usually weighs over 20,000 pounds.  Adults are needed from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM for the sorting and counting.  Then at 4:00 PM, more adults and lots of youth are needed to help put the corn in all the vehicles.  This usually runs until about 7:30 PM.  I have a great core group of adults that help every year; we would like to have more.  It is truly a great time.  The date is December 5.  The location is Rieter factory, next to the Bloomsburg Fair grounds.

Scouts, gather up your friends and come have fun with us “Doing a Good Turn”.

Your Popcorn Kernel,

Ed Botsford
